The Battle of the Bulge: How Men Can Win the Fight against Fat
Can the battle of the bulge—that all-too-common war fought by most men at some point in their lives—actually be won?
Yes! In fact, it can even be prevented!
As men age, their hormone levels change—testosterone falls and estrogen rises. Stress, lack of sleep, excessive carbohydrate intake (often in the form of alcoholic beverages), the use of medications and exposure to environmental estrogens (such as BPA and pthtlates which are commonly found in plastic water bottles and food containers) all cause increases in estrogen. Because estrogen is a fat storage hormone, this shift sets the stage for problem weight gain.
Because fat cells produce estrogen, a vicious cycle of hormone-driven fat production begins (estrogen increases fat and fat creates more estrogen). It’s easy to see how high estrogen can quickly become a threat—not just to a man’s appearance, but to his overall health and performance. And once too much estrogen is present in the male body, those less-than-optimal lifestyle choices and dietary habits begin to play a critical role in determining if, when and how much a man’s mid-section will affected.
Another large factor is the excess production of insulin— another fat storage hormone. If your body is producing too much insulin, you won't just find it harder to keep up on the hills, you’ll be at a much higher risk for developing a serious illness like cardiovascular disease, diabetes or cancer. Once those few insulin-induced pounds are in place, they become difficult to contain and hard to lose.
While small amounts of insulin are needed by the body to drive glucose (the body’s primary source of energy), excessive amounts prevent amino acids and other vital nutrients from being absorbed at the cellular level.
What happens when there’s too much glucose present in the bloodstream? The body is forced to release high levels of insulin to keep the glucose from spiraling out of control. But in time, the cells slowly become less sensitive to this signal; and the body becomes insulin resistant. The body must then release even more insulin and the resulting excess seriously disrupts cellular metabolism. Inflammation and higher body fat levels are just two of the many consequences. Erratic performances, fatigue and delayed recovery are a few of the early warning signs.
There are other reasons why it may be difficult for men to win their fight against fat. While they are promoted as sugars that don’t affect blood sugar, fructose and corn syrup—the primary ingredients in most sodas and many ‘sports’ drinks like Gatorade—directly fuel fat storage and create insulin resistance. Eliminating fructose and corn syrup from your diet is probably the single, most important thing you can to for your health.
In addition, protein, essential amino acid or essential fat deficiencies can make your body produce or hold onto more fat. A mineral imbalance such as low magnesium (which will slow down your metabolism by reducing your thyroid function) and a vitamin D deficiency can also play a key role in promoting stubborn weight gain.
Now that you know a little bit more about how the factors influencing fat production work, maybe its time to stop dieting (it doesn’t work) and focus on satisfying your body’s basic, biological needs. Are your hormone levels imbalanced? What is your glycohemoglobin (average blood glucose) level? Are you magnesium deficient? Low on vitamin D?
The Elite Performance Profile (available at www.bioletics.com) gives you the ability to identify and address these (and several other) imbalances that may be working against you and your goal of restoring (or maintaining) your lean, youthful physique. This comprehensive assessment package profile includes a series of ten assessments, all of which can be completed with a simple finger stick, urine or saliva sample in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Your results will provide a clear and concise picture of what key nutrients your body really needs to stay fit, healthy and lean—regardless of your age!
